Research Nuggets: Cognitive Radio Networking and Security

Cognitive radio (CR) enabled dynamic spectrum access (DSA) is hailed as the latest frontier of wireless communications. It provides a mechanism to address the issue of underutilization of licensed spectrum bands brought about by static spectrum allocation policies. Scientific research in this area has drive significant policy changes throughout the world. Several countries have now liberalized spectrum sharing in order to achieve better broadband connectivity. My group's research in this area spans several topics from dynamic spectrum access protocol and system design to the unique security and reliability challenges that these new paradigms open up. Our research has given rise to a technology start-up company, Dynamic Spectrum LLC in this area. My research in this area has been supported by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute of Justice. My publications in this area have been cited in the Wireless Spectrum Research and Development (WSRD), Senior Steering Group (SSG) Suggested Readings as well as the IEEE COMSOC Best Reading Topics on Cognitive Radio. One of the papers also won a Best Student Paper Award for my student. I serve as a Subject Matter Expert to the National Spectrum Consortium, a body whose mission it is to execute R&D, prototyping, and piloting initiatives using innovative contracting methodologies that leverage both governmental and consortia technological, financial, and human resources to coordinate and broaden the access to, and maximize the military and commercial value of the existing electromagnetic spectrum. I am the Founding Chair of the Security Special Interest Group, IEEE Technical Committee on Cognitive Networks. I am also a Founding Associate Editor of IEEE Transactions on Cognitive Networks and have served as Associate editor for other IEEE journals in this area.
